Henry Cross made a mistake; in fact he made two. The first was to spy for the Soviet Union inside a top-secret U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons laboratory. The second was to get caught. When the KGB finds out Henry Cross is a defector, it orders a second mole at Monroe Laboratory to kill Cross in a conspicuous manner. Other KGB agents need to be reminded that disloyalty will not be tolerated. Upon discovery of the murder, the DOE, FBI, and Monroe security conclude that another spy is operating at the site. Not wanting to reveal its intelligence to the mole or create a media circus at a top-secret lab, DOE covers up the murder. Into this situation walks Ed Cotter, a newly recruited cold warrior. In a world where hyper-enforced federal regulations and their unintended consequences are the norm, Ed proves himself to be a positive addition to the staff. But one of his colleagues, Curtis Judd, is less than thrilled. Judd provokes Cotter in not so subtle ways, letting him know that he isn’t welcome at Monroe. But Ed Cotter isn’t leaving. In the meantime, the hunt for the spy continues, and Cotter gets drawn into it. An Imposition is the first in a series of books based on events at the Department of Energy’s top-secret Monroe nuclear weapons laboratory during the boom years of the Reagan administration.

An Imposition The Monroe Chronicles Volume 1 Bill Merten Books

Murder in an atomic weapons research facility, highly classified, would be a setting for Lee Child or Stephen Hunter, but their protagonists would have difficult passing the security apparatus and gaining entry. Here, everyone significant has a security clearance, but that does not stop a mole or perhaps several. Set in the 1980's, against a background of cold war interest in atomic secrets, scientists in a weapons lab are working to design and perfect the nuclear arsenal. It is amazing how much detailed analysis and invention takes place. One wonders how anyone could make and test these weapons, design them to a level of perfection to assure that they would work in the first place, and last a while on the shelf. So, this is a window into a radioactive protected world that exists, but is impossible to imagine without a lot of knowledge. And the technical details ring true. The bureaucratic regulations, personalities, rivalries, and the consequences of actions in this isolated world all ring true and accurate, making this a very interesting undertaking. The pace accelerates towards the close of this episode, tying together the events but leaving the reader with an appetite for more.

An Imposition The Monroe Chronicles Volume 1 Bill Merten Books Reviews

First off I promised the author I would explain to everyone what a glove box is, at least in the context it is used in this book. You can find the actual use and description on his website. Have you ever seen a newborn ICU or at least a picture of one where the Mom has her hands in a pair of gloves so she can touch her baby inside the box--yup that is also a glove box of sorts--the glove boxes in this book are used to handle radioactive materials-and yes, a person does end up inside of one of them!

Working in a high security, top secret lab is far from easy--all the rules and who can know what and when. It is a prestigious job and when Ed Cotter gets hired he seems to fit right in, except for one co-worker who definitely has it in for Ed--but then things begin to happen--

This is the first in the series and the book will leave you hanging------guess I will just have to get the next two when they come out!! Yes, I enjoyed it that much.
Surprisingly, the complicated setting, inside of a nuclear weapons research facility, held my interest throughout. Without completely understanding all the technology, I found the smooth pace, interesting characters, and intrigue gripping. It's really a thriller, The conclusion makes you anticipate the next in this series.
"An Imposition" is about spies, murder, cover-ups--all during the nuclear weapons mindset of the 1980s. Finding a mole and a murderer in a nuclear weapons facility is nearly impossible. It is a unique environment with extenuating circumstances that make retrieving evidence impossible.

The plot is unique. The characters, though not particularly likable, are believable under the circumstances. The author didn't complete the story so there will be at least one more book. With the exception of some obscene language (used at least twice), the book is not too bad for the author's first try. I think he could have been more concise and added more humor--one scene in particular stands out as humorous which added an interesting element to an otherwise tense story and I wish there had been more. I would have also liked for the author to have left out the offensive language, but that was his prerogative. It seemed that since it was sparingly used anyway it could have been left out altogether.

Disclosure of Material Connection I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
I've not yet finished the book, which I downloaded to my , but I am really enjoying it. Go Bill!
A gruesome murder sends shock waves through a cloistered world of nervous bureaucrats and eager young geeks. Merten masterfully follows the lives of people who get swept up in it, as they struggle to figure out what is happening and what to do about it. It's entertaining and informative. I read it in a week!
